The Secrets to Healthy Skin This Winter

The cold weather is coming, and quickly. Many people don’t change their skincare regimen with the changing seasons. This is vitally important to keeping skin looking and feeling healthy. Here are some tips to help you ensure your skin gets the TLC it needs this winter

You Still Need SPF Care

Even though it is colder in the winter it doesn’t mean the sun lets up in anyway and your skin can still be damaged by UV rays if you do not apply SPF protection. The same rules apply as in summer, SPF should be applied to all exposed skin, especially your face. Invest in a good quality moisturiser with a high SPF protection to ensure the sun doesn’t get the best of you when you least expect it.

Wash with Lukewarm Water

Overly hot showers and baths feel fantastic in winter, however they strip the skin of its natural oils that keep them moisturised and elasticated. You can add some exfoliation to the mix but not too often, once a week is plenty. Turn down the temperature and be sure to apply plenty of moisturizer or even a lovely organic hydration oil, right after bathing (this is when it is best absorbed) to avoid drying out your skin.

Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise

Did I mention moisturise? This is the most important part of your winter skincare routine. Use an oil based moisturiser to lock in nutrients and elasticity promoting elements. Be sure to pay special attention to areas that dry out easily like your face (especially your lips), hands and feet. Keeping some hand cream in your purse will ensure your hands don’t dry out after washing them which strips them of natural oils that keep them moisturised.

Drink Plenty of Water

In winter, we tend to drink less water and more hot drinks like tea and coffee. You should still be drinking water for your general health and the vital role it plays therein. Water is essential to keeping skin healthy no matter what season it is. For a warming alternative try some warm water with lemon for a hydrating and refreshing winter drink.

Up Your Intake of Nutrients for Skin Health

Eating food with a high water content will help to hydrate both you and your skin. Vitamin C and zinc in your diet ensure collagen and elastin levels remain high for supple skin. Omega 3 fatty oils in your diet will also ensure you keep your youthful glow despite the cold weather. These vitamins will help your skin retain the moisture you have taken the effort to apply.
